On October 25th, 2003 a delegation from Team Bergamo of Naugatuck and Cheshire,
CT, traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to compete in the International Sport Karate
Association's United States Breaking Championships.
The competition team competed against the top breakers in the country. The team
members who competed were Clinton Murphy, Raphael Velez, and Peter Demarco.
Accompanying the team was Master Ralph Bergamo.
Three of the four breaking divisions at the competition were dominated by Team
Bergamo with Clinton Murphy winning the United States Heavyweight Power
Breaking Championship by slamming through thirteen 2" cement patio blocks with
a single strike. Murphy also captured the United States Creative Breaking
Championship with a routine similar to his US Open routine which he performed
in FL in July of this year, and has recently been televised on ESPN2. His
routine included 3 consecutive chops through stacks of five 2" cement
patio blocks, a left and right shin kick through Baseball bats, and finishing
by demolishing a coconut with a bottomfist. Murphy was also awarded "Top
Breaker" of the competition.
Raphael Velez dominated the Light Weight division, winning the United States
Lightweight Power Breaking Championship with a single strike through twelve
cement blocks, which is believed to be the most ever broken in a lightweight
competition. Team Bergamo plans to continue traveling across the country and
world in these types of events.
Team Bergamo is scheduled to perform a demonstration of weapons and Extreme
Breaking in Puerto Rico for an International tournament Thanksgiving weekend.
They will also be teaching two seminars in Extreme Breaking technique.
