Instructors of Bergamo's Martial Arts

Instructor Ronald A. Sullivan

Mr. Sullivan began his Martial Arts career around 1978. It was not so much his personal interest in the arts that of his older brother, a student who coerced Mr. Sullivan into starting Martial Arts. Finding no real interest in training, Mr. Sullivan stopped after about one year.

In 1981, Mr. Sullivan decided to try the Martial Arts again, this time for himself. After checking out various studios and styles, Mr. Sullivan decided that Cheshire Martial Arts, owned by Master Bergamo, was the studio that he would most like to be part of and that Kun Tao was the style he would like to learn.

Cheshire Martial Arts then moved it's training to CATS Martial Arts and Gymnastics, where Master Bergamo brought in other instructors such as Mr. Heidcamp, Mr. Moon, and Mr. Lyons, to help round off the Martial Arts training at his studio. In 1987, Mr. Sullivan began training under Master Michael Byrnes at his studio, the Modern Self-Defense Center, in the "Brooklyn" section of Waterbury; this was originally Grandmaster Rossi's studio. The Modern Self-Defense Center is where Mr. Sullivan first met Master Serrano and Mr. Jon Gentile.

Mr. Sullivan continued training with Master Byrnes for four years until he heard that Master Bergamo had started up classes at Gold's Gym in Waterbury. Around this time, Master Bergamo was in the process of reopening the original Cheshire Martial Arts. One of Master Bergamo's students at the time was Mr. Raymond Barquin. Mr. Barquin and Mr. Sullivan trained on a daily basis under Master Bergamo and received their first degree Black Belts on December 1992. Mr. Sullivan received his 2nd degree Black Belt in August 1997 and his 3rd degree in May 2001.

Mr. Sullivan is also a recognized 3rd degree Black Belt in the Kar-Do-Jitsu-Ryu Federation under Sedoshi John Manniel. Mr. Sullivan has trained with many instructors over the years but considers his bond with the other Kun Tao Black Belts, to be built out of mutual trust, respect, and admiration, to be at the forefront of his Martial Arts career. Mr. Sullivan holds the bond he has built with Master Bergamo over the years with the highest regard of all.
