Cypriot karate athlete wins gold at 2021 EKF Cadet, Junior and U21 Championships

In a thrilling Junior Kumite Male -76kg final at the 2021 EKF Cadet, Juniors and U21 Championships, Loizos Vasilou of Cyprus won a hard-fought title after beating Rumil Jafarli of Azerbaijan by 2-1 with a “Yuko” or a point technique in the last seconds of the fight.

The second day of competition of the 2021 Cadet, Junior and U21 EKF Championships saw future stars of European karate demonstrate their sensational abilities on the tatami mat at the Tampere, Finland rink, the competition site said.

A press release from the Cypriot Karate Federation states that on the second day of the European Junior Karate Championships, Cyprus managed to secure ten wins with Andreas Gavriel U16 -52kg, Stavros Charalambides U16 -63kg, Christoforos Kitsios U18 – 68kg, Irene Kontou U18 -48kg, Rebekah Economidou U18 -59kg, and five wins for Vasiliou U18 -76kg.

The 2021 EKF Cadet, Junior & U21 championships end on Sunday with the last categories in play.

The Cyprus Sports Organization, in a press release, congratulated Vassiliou, noting that this is a historic victory for one of his athletes. “It is an international success which promotes Cypriot karate and Cypriot sports in general”.

The CSO also congratulated the Cyprus Karate Federation for its long-standing support for Vassiliou and the karate athletes.
