North Sumatra aim for two gold medals in karate at PON

Medan (ANTARA) – North Sumatra aims to achieve two gold medals in the sporting branch of karate at the National Games (PON) scheduled for October 11-14, 2021 at Kayu Batu Aviation Polytechnic GOR, Jayapura City.

North Sumatran karate coach Delphinus Rumahorbo is optimistic that North Sumatran karate athletes could win a gold medal for the region at this Papua PON.

“In 2016 at West Java PON we won two gold medals. We were also aiming for two gold medals in this Papua PON. We would be grateful if we could bring home more medals,” he said. Rumahorbo said on Saturday.

With eight athletes, Rumahorbo admitted not only to expect medals from several senior athletes, including Dessyinta, Wan Nurul and Widodo, who had previously competed in PON, but also hoped for a medal from young, rookie athletes in this PON. from Papua.

“We are optimistic that our young athletes would surprise us with medals. They won in the junior category. Despite different pressures and tensions at PON, so far we have trained them. For example, Nicky (Dwi Oktari) comes from joined the army, and we hope that his experience can strengthen his fighting spirit, ”he said.

In addition to competing with other karate athletes, Rumahorbo expects North Sumatran karate athletes to be able to protect themselves from conditions outside the competitive arena, such as the COVID-pandemic. 19 and persistent malaria in Papua.

“I think the athletes have more or less heard of the conditions there. It will certainly have an effect, but we are trying to respond to it through training. Hopefully they will be strong enough, ”said Rumahorbo.

At XX Papua PON, the North Sumatran karate contingent will be reinforced by eight athletes, who will compete in the kumite and kata branches.

The eight athletes include Dessyinta Banurea (+68 kg for women), Gusti Bayu (-75 kg for men), Widodo Febrianto (-84 kg for men) and Daniel (+84 kg for men), Faisal Siahaan ( -60 kg male), Nicky Dwi Oktari (-61 kg female), Dwi Fadhilah (-50 kg female) and Wan Nurul Zulfa (-68 kg female).
